The Taylor Statten Camps to sell its Temagami Outpost

For Immediate Release

The Board of Directors of the Taylor Statten Camps (TSC) announced today that it will place its canoe tripping Outpost property (Lake Maskinonge, Temagami, Ontario) up for sale, effective Tuesday June 30, 2015.

Known affectionately as “the Outpost” by TSC campers and staff, TSC originally purchased the property in the 1960’s as a back-up site should the camp lease in Algonquin Park not be renewed. Not being required for its original purpose, the Outpost developed into a popular canoe tripping outpost facility for TSC’s extended canoe tripping program. In recent years, the continued rise in both the 2 week summer camp program at TSC, and the increasing desire to canoe trip for longer periods in areas outside of Temagami such as Quetico Provincial Park, Biscotasing, Killarney, and Kipawa, use of the Outpost by TSC has diminished to less than 13 days per year.

All TSC canoe trips scheduled to use the Outpost in the summer of 2015 will remain unaffected, and TSC will continue extended canoe trips to Temagami in the future using the services of a local outfitter instead of the Outpost. “The Outpost has been a very popular part of the TSC canoe tripping experience over many generations” said Taylor (Tike) Statten, the Chairman of the Taylor Statten Camp Company Limited. “While it has not been an easy decision to let the Outpost go, TSC will continue to send campers to Temagami to enjoy the natural beauty of this area for many generations to come, with exciting new and adventurous canoe trip routes planned”.

TSC will invest 100% of the proceeds realized from the sale of the Outpost back into its Camp Ahmek and Camp Wapomeo facilities on Canoe Lake, Algonquin Park in projects such as camper and staff cabin upgrades and program facility improvements. It is expected that Hugh Doran, our long-standing Director of the Outpost will continue with TSC in another capacity for many years to come.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: Why is TSC selling the Outpost?

A: TSC’s use of the Outpost as a Canoe Tripping facility has diminished over the last decade, with the facility now being used by campers for less than 13 days per year, making long term use of the facility uneconomical. TSC plans to invest 100% of the profits realised from the sale of the Outpost back into its facilities on Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park in projects such as cabin upgrades and program facility improvements.

Q: My child is taking a canoe trip that is scheduled to make stop at the Outpost in 2015. What’s happening?

A: All Outpost canoe trips (and long trips making a stop at the Outpost) scheduled for summer 2015 will proceed as planned and will use the Outpost.

Q: How does this affect Algonquin Park canoe trips?

A: It doesn’t. Algonquin Park trips are unaffected.

Q: Will TSC send trips to Temagami in the future?

A: Yes. TSC will offer Temagami canoe trips for all ages of campers from the summer of 2016 onwards in place of its Outpost program. New routes and adventures are planned. More details will be available when registration opens in November 2015.

Q: What is happening to Hugh Doran?

A: It is expected that Hugh Doran, the long-standing Director of the Outpost will continue with TSC in another capacity for many years to come.
