The Taylor Statten Camps are committed to preserving and maintaining the natural environment. The Camps carry out several environmentally-friendly practices that are based on the principle of low-impact camping. The premise of low-impact camping is to leave any physical site you occupy, whether in camp or on canoe trip, virtually unchanged and as you found it. This principle is upheld in our canoe tripping philosophies and applied to many aspects of our operations.

Environmental techniques employed on our canoe trips include maintaining and using only existing campsites and portages, eliminating containers such as cans and bottles before trip and packing out all garbage and food waste. Where campsites are rare or where bushwhacking is necessary, every effort is made to limit our footprint on the earth's surface.

While at camp, methods to minimize impact include: composting, recycling (traditional recyclables, batteries), monitoring and controlling food waste; washing all of our dishes and cookware instead of using disposable dining hall place settings; utilizing energy-efficient lighting; employing solar panels on our Ahmek washroom facility (see Facilities under Prospective Campers section) and at our Outpost Camp in Temagami. We also plant small organic gardens at Ahmek and at our Outpost. In keeping with our "living in nature" philosophy, our camper cabins are purposefully rustic and do not use electricity. For lighting, campers and staff use battery-operated flashlights and lanterns. Recharging stations for batteries are located in Main Camp where there is hydro and solar power.

Our goal is not only to help maintain the majestic surroundings of Algonquin Park and other tripping areas but also to instill awareness and sound environmental practices in both our campers and staff. All of our garbage disposal, water purification and sewage procedures are approved and monitored by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and/or the Ministry of Natural Resources.
