Top 10 Tips for Making the Best of Camp

Top 10 tips for making the best of camp

Camp is an incredible environment to experience new things, because it gives you the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone. Here are some tips to help you make the best of your time at camp:

  1. Set Personal Goals:

Whether you want to climb to the top of the rock wall, hop on a horse, or stern a canoe for the first time, it is important to set personal goals for the summer to ensure you are breaking out of your comfort zone. Be sure to share you accomplished goals with other campers and even staff to inspire them to set their own goals!

  1. New Grub:

This summer we are really looking forward to our new catering company Lakeside Catering! Trying new foods or different cuisines can be intimidating or scary, but by experimenting with food choices, and trying a meal that you wouldn’t usually eat at home, you may find some new favourites. We are definitely looking forward to falafel on the menu at Wapomeo!

  1. Take a Dip:

For some people the lake can cause some uneasiness, but there is nothing more refreshing than a huge cannonball into the lake on a hot summer’s day. Even taking a dip in the lake on the cooler rainy days is fun because the lake is often warmer than the outside air.

  1. New Friends:

Sometimes our friends from previous years at camp get placed in other cabins or attend different sessions, which can be really difficult. Not to worry! Camp is the perfect place to meet new friends in your cabin, and in other cabins. Campers come to Canoe Lake from all over the world! You may make friends that live right down the street from you in the city or even from half way around the world.

  1. Speak Up:

It can be intimidating to ask questions or for help when you are new to camp or unsure about something. We welcome all of your questions. If you are uncertain about something at camp it is best to speak up and ask!

  1. Personal Growth:

Being away from home for a week, two weeks, a month, or even a full summer can be tough. Whether it is your first summer away from home or your ninth summer, we know that it is not always easy without mom or dad. However, camp is the best place to gain independence. Summer is a time to try something new, and gain experience.

  1. Keep an open mind:

Maybe last summer you attended an activity you weren’t completely thrilled about, or bush-wacked an unmaintained portage. Sure, they may not have been the most exciting, but by keeping an open mind and staying positive, you can turn any experience into an optimistic and constructive one.

  1. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff:

Forgot a toothbrush, Nalgene, or sunscreen? No need to worry. These items can be purchased in our camp Tuck Shop along with items such as sweatpants, t-shirts, and toques. Have an upset tummy? Our friendly nurses would love to help you out. Forgot a good book to read? Stop by the camp library and check out a summer read.

  1. Document, Document, Document:

Don’t forget to document all the new friends you have made and the wonderful experiences you have shared. You will want to remember your time on Canoe Lake, since you have followed all of these tips to make the best of your summer! You can document by writing in a journal, snapping some pictures, or even writing a new song. Be creative, but don’t forget to document!

  1. Have fun!

Camp is an experience of a lifetime. You will be making memories, and creating friendships that will last for years to come. The best advice we can give is to laugh, and have fun!
