Senior Staff

Assistant Director

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We have two (2) openings for Assistant Director. 

The responsibilities of the Assistant Director is to support the Director, handle administration and logistics. This job requires someone who is organized, manages time well and can problem solve. This position provides an amazing opportunity to be involved with the behind-the-scenes of camp and ensuring everything is running smoothly. It is a big job, but it is extremely rewarding!

Head Guide

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have two (2) openings for Head Guide.

Both Camp Ahmek and Wapomeo have a Head Guide. The Head Guides work very closely with our Canoe Tripping Coordinator to ensure that all canoe trips run smoothly. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining our Trip Room (aka The Trading Post), overseeing the distribution and return of all canoe trip equipment (tents, pots, pans, water purifiers, stoves, propane, canoes, etc.), management and training of all canoe trip guides, route planning, food drop logistics (for Long Trips only), maintaining and cataloging maps, etc. Essentially the Head Guides are responsible for all canoe trip related activities and will spend a lot of time with the Canoe Tripping Coordinator to ensure that everyone has a safe and memorable summer. A strong canoe tripping background, an intimate knowledge of bush craft, and a knack for building and maintaining a positive group dynamic are a must. A current Bronze Cross, Wilderness First Aid, and a Pleasure Craft Operator’s License are required.

Program Director

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We have two (2) openings for Program Director.

The responsibilities of the Program Director are to manage activity staff and develop a weekly programming schedule alongside the Section Directors. This job requires someone who is organized, works well on a team and enjoys meeting new people. Ahmek and Wapomeo Program Directors work together to ensure campers are able to experience all activities that TSC has to offer. Current Bronze Cross, First Aid and CPR certifications are required.

Section Director

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

Ahmek: CIT, Bantam, Pioneer, Mountaineer, Voyageur, Senior
Wapomeo: CIT, Kiowa, Tuscie, Shawnee, Ojib/Cree, Long Trip

Each age group is called a “Section” and there is a Section Director for each one.  Section Directors do not take care of a cabin of their own, but rather oversee the Section as a whole, supporting the counsellors in their duties, programming activities, and planning evening activities and special events

Counselling Staff

Counsellor-in-Training (CIT) 

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

Counsellors In Training (C.I.T.’s) must be 17 years old by the end of the calendar year. C.I.T.s must be keen to learn the art of being a camp counsellor, guide, and/or an activity head. Cabin C.I.T.s shadow a counsellor and are assigned to a cabin group. You’ll be working with campers between the ages of 7 and 12. C.I.T.s with an interest in a particular program may spend a month shadowing the Activity Head of their choice. C.I.T.s at both camps also have the opportunity to help lead canoe trips. Paddling and canoeing tripping experience is an asset. A current Bronze Cross is required for this position as well as Emergency First Aid and CPR. C.I.Ts will have the opportunity to take a Wilderness First Aid course during pre-camp if desired.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

CIT spend the full two months at camp and earn an honorarium of $300. All positions include room, board, laundry and use of facilities.

Counsellor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We look for the best role models in the land to be camp counsellors at TSC. As a counsellor to campers, your impact is direct and easily life-long. We are looking for sensitive, intelligent, fun and interesting people to be counsellors. Experience paddling and canoe tripping is an asset. Each of our counsellors must have their Bronze Cross and Wilderness First Aid.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

Canoe Trip Guide

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have twenty (20) openings for Canoe Trip Guides.

The canoe trip guides are often on the go at camp, in and out on flat-water canoe trips all summer long. Guides average between 30 and 40 days on the water each summer. Guides work with counsellors and C.I.T.s to provide a safe, challenging, and memorable experience. Strong canoe tripping skills and a knack for building and maintaining a positive group dynamic are a must. A current Bronze Cross and Wilderness First Aid are required as well as previous tripping days.

Trip locations vary between Algonquin and Temagami.

Program & Support Staff

Archery Instructor

Camp: Ahmek 

Job description:

We have one (1) opening for Archery Instructor.

Archery Safety is the primary concern at the archery range. Then accuracy. This activity head must have Level One Archery Instructors or 5 years experience in Archery and must be 19 years of age or older and have First Aid and CPR.

  • Responsible for planning and teaching Archery classes for children ages 6 -16
  • Previous Archery experience an asset
  • Previous experience working with children an asset

Arts and Crafts Instructor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We have two (2) openings for Arts & Crafts Instructors.

Arts and Crafts can range from bracelet making to tie-dye to wood working to set construction for skit nights, The Wap Review theatrical performance, and Final Play at the end of August. Whoever heads-up Arts and Crafts needs to be creative, flexible and have a lot of initiative. Current First Aid and CPR certifications are required.

Babysitter

Camp: Ahmek 

Job description:

We have one (1) opening for babysitter.

This job revolves around the care and supervision of the director of Camp Ahmek’s children. They are lovely kids who enjoy playing on the beach, swimming and arts & crafts. Experience babsyitting is an asset and current First Aid and CPR certifications are required.

Boat/Barge Drivers

Camp: Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have two (2) openings for Boat/Barge Drivers.

As Wapomeo is located on two islands transportation is a major part of our summer. We rely on boats and 30 or 40 foot long barges to move campers and staff between the islands and the mainland. The Boat/Barge driver must be punctual by nature. It also helps if you already know how to tie knots, dock boats, and work motors. You must hold a current Pleasure Craft Operators License, SVOP license*, MED A3, as well as First Aid and CPR certifications.

Camp Craft Instructor 

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We have two (2) openings for Camp Craft/Ecology Instructors.

Camp Craft is the bridge between our in-camp program and out of camp canoe tripping. The focus is on bush craft skills such as orienteering, map reading, fire starting, fire by friction, and plant/wildlife identification. Whoever heads-up Camp Craft needs to be creative, flexible and have a lot of initiative. Current First Aid and CPR certifications are required.

 Canoeing Instructor 

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We have two (2) openings for Canoeing instructors.

The Head of Canoeing teaches canoeing lessons and facilitates the running of the canoeing program with the counselors. This person reports to the Program Director and is responsible for the development, safety, delivery and supervision of the Canoe program. They also take care of our fleet of cedar-canvas and Kevlar canoes.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Current Bronze Cross
  • Current First Aid and CPR “C”
  • Boating license
  • Relevant canoeing experience
  • At least one summer of experience working in a canoeing environment.
  • Demonstrated competencies in canoe skill delivery such as, facilitation, program planning, safety management and rescue
  • Experience leading other staff in the delivery of a canoeing program

Dining Hall Supervisor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have two(2) openings for Dining Hall Supervisor.

The Dining Hall Supervisor will control the back kitchen making sure that while campers and staff are back there picking up their food, organization is maintained. Control the number of cabins in the back kitchen at one time. They will also be responsible for making sure everyone is reporting for duty on time, and that each assigned job has been done to perfection.

The Dining Hall supervisor will need to submit the total dining hall numbers, table numbers, and early breakfasts for each day of camp.

Example of Kitchen Duties:

  1. General cleaning of Dishroom, Back Kitchen, and Dining Hall. This includes a thorough cleaning of all surfaces (serving trays, counter tops, shelves, etc.)
  2. Management of food waste buckets/compost bags.
  3. Equipment/utensil stock count/organising.
  4. Dining Hall tables set correctly for each meal.
  5. Placing orders for cleaning supplies through the camp office.
  6. Ringing the meal bells on time for each meal.
  7. Make sure that the orders from the kitchen are picked up in a timely manner.
  8. Assisting and managing the Dishroom/dishwashers

All staff must hold current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Job description:

We currently have four (4) opening for Dishwashers.

Drama & Music Instructor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have two (2) openings for Drama & Music Instructors.

This is mainly a Drama Instructor position, but it inevitably involves lots of music and dancing! We’re talking about ice-breaking games, improvisation, show nights, skit nights, monthly plays like the Wap Review in July and The Final Play in August. You must be encouraging and it helps to be spontaneous, creative and inventive in this job. Applicants must hold current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Driver/Office Helper

Camp: Ahmek 

Job description:

We currently have one (1) opening for Driver/Office Helper.

As an Office Helper, the more you know about computers and networking, the better. Also, it’s good for the Office Helper to enjoy filing and regaling in an office environment. As a Driver, you will be asked to drive into Huntsville a few times a week for business-related reasons, and then whenever there is an emergency or an expected pick-up or drop-off situation. Sometimes, The Driver goes up to Temagami. The Driver needs to be licensed to drive in Ontario, and that license must be clear of any driving-related incidents. The driver needs to be able to drive well and safely under pressure. A valid G-class Ontario Driver’s License is required for this job as well as current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Field Games Instructor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have one(1) opening for Field Games Instructor.

The Field Games Instructor is responsible for organizing various field games such as soccer, baseball, dodge-ball, basketball, as well as other games that require a large open space. You will be expected to manage, with the help of counselors, groups of campers ranging from 14 – 30 people at any given time. This job requires that you have high energy, a lot of creativity, excellent communication skills, are good at motivating people, comfortable working outdoors for extended periods of time, and are comfortable managing large groups. It is also very important to note that camper safety will be your number one priority. All staff must hold current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Head of Riding

Camp: Ahmek 

Job description:

We currently have one (1) opening for Head of Riding

Description:  The Head of English Horseback Riding is in charge of the Ahmek and Wapomeo Riding Programs. This includes being responsible for the well-being of three assistant English riding instructors, and two stable hands. Being responsible for the well-being of roughly eighteen horses, which includes the overseeing of their feeding program and general care. A thorough understanding of instructional technique and equine health is a must. The Head of Riding will have a minimum of 5 years experience instructing and be 21 years of age or older and have current First Aid and CPR certifications.

High Ropes Instructor

Camp: Ahmek 

Job description:

We are currently seeking a Ropes Course Instructor and an Assistant Ropes Course Instructor for our upcoming summer season.

Description: Challenge Ropes Course Staff must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Participated in a professional instructors training course for challenge ropes course adventure programming, or have equivalent on-the-job training
  • At least one summer of experience working in a challenge ropes course adventure program with youth
  • Demonstrated competencies in challenge ropes course skills such as technical, facilitation, program planning, safety management and rescue
  • First Aid and CPR “B”
  • Challenge Course Practitioner Level II or equivalent training and certification.

All Challenge Ropes Course staff must adhere to the Technical Training Standards of the Association for Challenge Course Technology (A.C.C.T)

Nightwatch

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have two (2) openings for Nightwatch Person.

As Night Watch, your principle duty is to safeguard the campers and the camp site from midnight until 7:00am. This includes making rounds and investigating nightly activity. Current First Aid and CPR certifications as well as a Pleasure Craft Operators License (if employed at Wapomeo) is required.

Nurse/Healthcare Assistant

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

Working hand-in-hand with the Camp Doctor, the Camp Health Care Assistant is responsible for the day to day operation of the Camp Infirmary.  The camps are a busy place during the summer and Health Care Assistants can expect to see a wide variety of cases.

We are looking for two Health Care Assistants to work with the camp doctor and to run the infirmary at Wapomeo, and two Health Care Assistants to work with the camp doctor and run the infirmary at Ahmek. Nursing students are welcome. 3rd and 4th year RN students are preferred, but PRN students are also welcome to apply.

You should have experience working with children and adolescents and preferably have past camp experience. You are responsible for the health and wellness of the camp and staff.

Receptionist

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have four (4) openings for Receptionists.

Office hours at camp run from 8 in the morning until 8 at night. There are two receptionists at Wapomeo, and two receptionists at Ahmek. Each receptionist works a half-day (8am to 2pm and 2pm to 8pm), and cover for the other’s meals. The receptionist is primarily responsible for answering the telephone, recording and passing along messages, sorting the mail and camper e-mail, helping to organize Visitor’s Days, and for keeping order in the office (physical and social). Other duties may include operating the Ahmek and Wapomeo libraries. The libraries are open to campers and staff each day between lunch and the start of afternoon activities (Roughly between 1:30pm and 2:30pm). This can be discussed further if you have any questions.

Riding Instructor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have three (3) openings for Horseback Riding Instructors 

Description:  This position involves teaching horseback riding to Ahmek and Wapomeo campers at the stables which are over at Ahmek. A fair amount of the day is spent at Ahmek, as that’s where the horses are. The Riding Instructors also help out with barn up-keep. All staff must hold current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Sailing Instructor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have two(2) openings for Sailing Instructors

Description:  The Head of Sailing organizes sailing lessons and is also available when campers and staff choose to go sailing in their free time. The Head of Sailing must be comfortable rigging, operating, and instructing with JY 15s and Laser IIs in various intensities of wind. The Head of Sailing at Wapomeo and Ahmek collaborate to organize and run the Roper Dayment Sailing Race in July and The Wilson in August. A current Bronze Cross, First Aid and CPR and a Pleasure Craft Operators License is required for this position. A CANSail 4 certification (Previously the Canadian Yachting Association Bronze Sail V), or the equivalent, is preferred. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Stablehand

Camp: Ahmek 

Job description:

We are currently are seeking two (2) Stablehands.

Stablehands are responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of the horses and stables at Camp Ahmek.

Tennis Instructor

Camp: Ahmek 

Job description:

We have one (1) opening for Tennis Instructor.

Description:  The tennis instructor must be adept at the game of tennis. The tennis instructor must be able to deliver instruction on a) the rules of the game, b) specific skills and drills, and c) proper etiquette on the court. The tennis courts are used by both Ahmek and Wapomeo campers, although the site for this program is at Ahmek and the Tennis Instructor lives at Ahmek. Must have a current First Aid and CPR “B” certification.

Tuck Shop. (Wapomeo) & Tuck Shop/Storehouse Coordinator (Ahmek)

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have one (1) opening for Tuck Shop/Babysitter and one (1) opening for Tuck Shop/Storehouse Coordinator

This person runs the Tuck Shop, keeping regular store hours after meals, and keeping a running inventory. It is also your responsibility to input camper and staff purchases into the camp system. You will work closely with the Logistics Coordinator in the camp office. Computer skills are an asset. This person is organized, motivated and enjoys working in merchandising. Current First Aid and CPR is required.

Storehouse: This involves keeping a current inventory of all camp supplies stored in the storehouse and this also involves informing the Logistics Coordinator when supplies need to be replenished.

Waterfront Activity Staff

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We are currently seeking two (2) Head of Waterfront and two (2) Assistant Waterfront Instructors.

Waterfront Staff must have the following minimum qualifications (or be willing to achieve them before the start of the summer):

  • At least one summer of experience working in a waterfront or community pool environment.
  • Demonstrated competencies in aquatic skill delivery such as, facilitation, program planning, safety management and rescue.
  • Experience leading other staff in the delivery of an aquatics program.
  • Current Certifications in National Lifeguard Service (NLS), Life Saving Society Instructors certification, Emergency First Aid and CPR “B”, Pleasure Craft Operators License .
  • Examiner qualifications an asset.

Weaving Instructor

Camp: Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have one (1) opening for Weaving Instructor.

Description:  Do you like textiles? The weaving program was started in the 1920′s at Camp Wapomeo for girls and has continued since then. Camp Wapomeo has three larger floor looms and two smaller floor looms. We do have a variety of other equipment which has been donated over the years including a number of hand looms. The programs make up is determined by the instructor in regards of what to teach and how to teach. Knitting and crochet are also a possibility here; felt up a storm! Current First Aid and CPR “B” certification is required.

Yoga Instructor

Camp: Ahmek and Wapomeo

Job description:

We currently have two (2) openings for Yoga Instructors.

Description:  There are several beautiful places to practice yoga around camp and we’re looking for an instructor. Balance, relaxation and breath control are big components of our canoe trips and having the ability to work on these skills during Yoga yields excellent results. This person should be comfortable teaching a wide age range (7-16) and able to target lessons for each group. Yoga mats are provided and the location for instructing is very versatile.
