  Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why choose the Taylor Statten Camps? And what is your philosophy?

A: An excellent camp is an established organization with accreditation from a respected governing body. The Taylor Statten Camps have a proven history, since 1921, of providing a safe, fun-filled learning environment that offers children an opportunity to thrive and form life-long friendships, all while fulfilling a keen sense of adventure. We have an enthusiastic, world-wide base of alumni who continue to involve themselves with the camps.  Accredited by the Ontario Camping Assocation, we are well respected amongst our peers and our clientele.  Our philosophy is based around an unrivaled combination of our special canoe trips and exciting in-camp programs, that will send your camper home with a greater sense of independence, improved confidence and indelible memories and experiences.

Q: What will my child do at camp for 27 days?

A: Our campers are kept very busy, yet unlike school every activity is fun and adventurous. Our base camp features swimming and tennis, arts&crafts and drama, and many more. In addition, we give our campers some time to make new friendships, develop their friendships, join in some impromptu ping-pong games and even make a trip to our library. We have a high ropes course, riding stable and archery range. We fill our campers' days and evenings with memory-making activity.

Q: What is a canoe trip really like?

A: Taylor Statten canoe trips are truly once-in-a-lifetime adventures - that take place every year a camper returns. Cabin groups embark together, so trips are planned with the interests and capabilities of their particular age in mind. Campers bond together as they work to make their trip a success - getting across the next portage, collecting firewood, cooking meals, and then drifting off to sleep under a star-filled sky. There is little wonder as to how these adventures create indelible memories.

Q: What are special trips versus in-park trips?

A: Camp is made up of many parts, the best being the canoe trip. We have many different canoe trips available. Everyone who comes to camp goes on a canoe trip within the boundaries of Algonquin Park. These trips range from one night overnights to 10-day trips. Our returning campers sometimes sign up for our 'special trips'. Special trips are for campers who have already experienced in the park trips and are looking for something different or more challenging. Special trips range from 8-days to 40-days. Visit our canoe tripping section under new campers to find out more.

Q: Who is taking care of my child?

A: Our staff members are true camping enthusiasts, ready to make each camper realize and appreciate the joys and the wonders of the camping experience. They are fun loving people, and at the same time they have a great deal of compassion for all those little things that can bother campers. At those little moments our staff can be counted upon to be there with a friendly word and an arm around the shoulder.

Q: What does my child need to bring to camp?

A: Campers need to be prepared for the rugged nature of camp, as well as the variety of conditions which they might encounter. Our clothing list is based upon years of experience. Please note that each piece of clothing sent to camp should be clearly labeled with the campers first and last name.

Q: Are there flush toilets and electricity at camp?

A: Camp has all of the amenities of modern life, while mixing in the adventure of the wilderness. Main camp has both flush toilets and electricity, however camper cabins do not. For those late night bathroom runs, when main camp might seem a bit too far off, there are outhouses close to every section of camper cabins.

Q: Can I visit my child at camp?

A:

We have five days each month on which we can accommodate visitors. These days have been chosen to correspond with our canoe tripping schedule.  For more information on our vistor days, please refer to our publication, Everything You Wanted To Know About Camp, updated in April.  You may call our summer office (late June through August) to book a visiting day with our camp hostess.

Q: How do I register for camp?

A:

Our Camps fill up very quickly. To make sure that you get the session you want, you should register before the end of December or, if possible, earlier. To register, you may use our quick and easy online registration service, or download and print our application forms from the website to be faxed or mailed. It's that simple.

Q: What ages are your campers?

A:

We accept campers ages 6-16 (sometimes 17 at the discretion of the camp director).

Q: Where do your campers come from?

A:

Q: What is your camper to staff ratio?

A:

Our camper to staff ratio is 3:1.  For our younger campers that ratio increases to 2:1 on canoe trip.  We hire upwards of 250 summer staff (includes both Ahmek and Wapomeo) who participate in week long Pre-Camp training sessions.  These training sessions include First Aid training, CPR, and emergency prodcedures both in camp and out on canoe trip.  Our Senior Staff members (Activity Heads and Section Directors) participate in a 2 week Pre-Camp.

Q: What cities do you provide transportation from?

A:

Our chartered buses travel to and from Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.  For International Campers, we provide transportation to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport. Our transportation staff will escort your camper to their gate at the end of their camp experience.

Q: Are The Taylor Statten Camps peanut-free?

A:

No. We continue to use peanut butter on a minimal basis, but can accomodate individual campers with allergies.  We have a camp doctor and a team of medical staff who are made aware of any camper medical conditions such as peanut allergies.  Peanut allergy campers are provided with separate eating utensils that are washed separately, ensuring no cross-contimination.  Our catering companies are sensitive to all food allergies and dietary needs.
