2022 Registration FAQ

Registration for 2022 is opening
Monday October 4, 2021!

As we enter the fall season with its busy back-to-school schedule, we wanted to take a brief moment of your time to reach out to you about next summer and our planned #Comeback2022. Hopefully all of you have found rewarding and satisfying ways to spend this past summer despite the social restrictions still in place. For our part, it was eerily quiet without our campers at Wapomeo and Ahmek, and we missed them tremendously. We have spent the last few months doing what we could in terms of repairs and renewal of our Canoe Lake facility, but more importantly we started our planning and renewal strategies for the 2022 season. We are determined to make it as rewarding and fresh and exciting as any other year in our 100+ year history. TSC has always prided itself on maintaining consistent core values, practices, and traditions, while layering on new initiatives and routines to continuously improve the experience of our young campers and staff. 2022 will be no different in this respect.

The Covid pandemic has upended the lives of people and businesses worldwide.  The challenges that the overnight summer camping industry has experienced are enormous and in many ways unique. Fortunately, we now have a lot of certainty that did not exist earlier this spring when we were forced to cancel our 2021 summer season. Canada now has significant vaccine uptake, a border that allows many international campers and staff to get to camp, which, along with certainty from the Ontario Provincial government who has legally permitted summer camps like ours to operate, allows us to say with confidence that we will be operating in 2022.

Camper families as well as staff will undoubtedly have many questions in the weeks and months to come and we will have answers. We are pre-emptively trying to gauge what those questions may be and will post Q&A’s accordingly on our website. We will be opening for registration on October 4, 2021 Our new Rates and Dates are now available on our website here: www.taylorstattencamps.com/rates-dates/

We will be adjusting a number of areas of our operations to respond to two summers of not having campers on Canoe Lake. Please watch for and read our team’s communications this fall as we roll out the following:

  • Clarification on Long Canoe Trip camper eligibility and pre-qualification requirements with corresponding pre-trip workshops
  • Staff training modifications including off-season online courses, special skill workshops prior to pre-camp, and additional 3rd party development support during pre-pre and pre-camp
  • An Alumni-in-Residence Program designed around enhancing our camper experience and staff ‘on the job’ skill development
  • An Alumni Volunteer Opportunity to help us expedite our facility renewal in the spring of 2022
  • New & exciting  in-camp Programming initiatives
  • Draft Covid protocols, if required, as issued by the OCA (Ontario Camping Association)
  • A Referral Program for those of you who provide substantial help bringing  new campers to Ahmek and Wapomeo

As with every annual rotation of our camp community, some people can’t or don’t wish to return to the shores of Canoe Lake and this year will be no different. We bid farewell to you and wish you the very best for all your summers to come. But for those of you who are joining us we really can’t express how excited we are to see you and host you here in 2022. We need you here. And from our perspective, the young population who creates the magical world of summer camp- you also need camp. The wonder of our natural setting and the social bonding that only happens here, has the power to change lives. TSC is a very special place and we can’t wait to reconnect those of you already know this, plus prove this to those of you who have yet to experience it.

Please call or email us anytime with any questions. We will be carving out additional space for camp tours, Zoom calls with new or existing clients, and are here to provide you with a sense of certainty, safety and excitement for your summer of 2022.

TSC COVID-19 GUARANTEE

If the Taylor Statten Camps cancels your camper session or Long Canoe Trip prior to the scheduled start of your camper session or Long Canoe Trip due to government imposed regulations that would otherwise prevent the Taylor Statten Camps from operating (and is otherwise unable to accommodate you on another session or Long Canoe Trip that is acceptable to you), you will be provided with a refund of fees paid to date. This is our guarantee to you, and please refer to our Terms & Conditions for the full details of this policy.

If your camper is prevented from travelling to Canada within 7 days or less from the start of the camper session or Long Canoe Trip that you registered for due to a government imposed restriction that would prevent your camper from travelling to Canada (including government mandated quarantine of more than 5 days), you will be provided with a refund of fees paid to date. Again, this is our guarantee to you, and please refer to our Terms & Conditions for the full details of this policy

TSC SAFETY PLAN

Closer to the start of the Summer, we will release a detailed TSC COVID Safety Manual on which every staff member will be trained before camp. It will also provide details for camp families about their role within the safe experience at camp. It will be based on the Ontario Camping Association COVID regulations and guidelines but customized to suit our operations at TSC.

As we finalize that written TSC Safety Plan, we will also continually watch for and adopt all relevant guidelines, regulations, and best practices from Health Canada, and local, Ontario, and Federal Government Regulations.

Ultimately, our goal is to create the safest possible experience in 2022 for our campers and our staff. Based on everything we knew in May of 2021, we were not in a position to open camp safely nor were we legally allowed to do so at that time. However, based on everything we know now, along with the vaccine uptake, we are moving full-speed ahead with planning for a safe, memorable, and amazing Summer for 2022, with full confidence that we will be allowed to operate our full program.

For your reference, we have prepared a set of Frequently Asked Questions to address any questions or concerns that you may have.

Your continued and loyal support of the Taylor Statten Camps is very much appreciated.

2022 FAQ

  • You couldn’t open camp in 2020 nor 2021, so how can you open in 2022?

The landscape for overnight residential summer camps is much different now than it was this past spring and early summer. Ontario has significant vaccine uptake and availability for anyone 12 and older. We also are now legally permitted to operate as per Ontario’s re-opening plan. We also have fully developed Covid protocols (testing, cleaning, operational modifications etc) designed and ratified specifically for summer camps as issued by the Ontario Camping Association (OCA).  Any new developments over the coming months that Public Health determines can be deleted from the protocols, or added if necessary, can now be quickly and easily assimilated into the OCA protocols. We can confidently say that we will be operating in 2022.

  • Will you be able to operate your Long Canoe Trip Program in 2022?

Yes we will absolutely be operating our full complement of Special and Long Canoe Trips in 2022.

Learn more about our Long Trip Program here.

  • Will camper places be limited in 2022?

Although possible, we are not anticipating any major limitations at this time. The current Public Health regulations for summer camps do restrict some aspects of day to day camp operations however these limitations do NOT affect total numbers of campers and staff that can attend the facility throughout the course of the summer. We do however anticipate strong demand for certain sessions and special trips so we encourage you to register as early as possible to avoid any disappointment.

  • Will I get a refund if camp is canceled due to Covid 19?

Yes. If the Taylor Statten Camps cancels your camper session or Long Trip in full prior to the scheduled start of your camper session or Long Canoe Trip due to government imposed regulations that would otherwise prevent the Taylor Statten Camps from operating (and is otherwise unable to accommodate you on another session or Long Canoe Trip that is acceptable to you), you will be provided with a refund of fees paid to date. This is our guarantee to you, and please refer to our Terms & Conditions for the full details of this policy.

  • Will I get a refund if my camper is unable to travel to Canada due to Covid-19?

Yes. If your camper is prevented from travelling to Canada within 7 days or less from the start of the camper session or Long Trip that you registered for due to a government imposed restriction that would prevent your camper from travelling to Canada (including government mandated quarantine of more than 5 days), you will be provided with a refund of fees paid to date. Again, this is our guarantee to you, and please refer to our Terms & Conditions for the full details of this policy

  • How can I be sure you will refund me?

In 2020 and 2021, TSC refunded all families that remained registered with us up to the date of cancellation, and we have made the same promise for 2022. Our Terms & Conditions contain full details of this guarantee, including a small fee to assist TSC with the costs associated with registering and then refunding.

  • Are you accepting Bursary Fund Campers in 2022?

Yes, we know that many of our families are struggling financially due to the economic instability of the past six months. We are committed to raising additional Bursary Fund places in 2022 to ensure that we can help support any child who would like to come to Camp Ahmek or Camp Wapomeo, and we will work closely with the Taylor Statten Camping Bursary Fund (a registered charity that is independent from the Taylor Statten Camp Company) to bring as many bursary campers as possible to the Taylor Statten Camps in the Summer of 2022.

  • My camper was devasted that they could not participate in their chosen long trip in 2020 nor 2021. Do they get priority for this trip in 2021?

Yes, campers that have remained registered with us up until May 2021 will receive priority in the consideration of their long trip application for 2022 if they want to complete the same trip, or they may progress to the next trip tier without having completed the pre-requisite in 2021. Kindly note that TSC reserves the right limit automatic trip tier progression for safety reasons, if relevant, and is unable to accept campers that have reached (or will reach) the age of 18 years at camp.

  • My camper wants to progress to the next long trip tier in 2022, but didn’t completed the pre-requisite in 2020 or 2021. Will that be possible?

Yes, campers that have remained registered with us up until May 2021 will receive priority in the consideration of their long trip applications for 2022 if they want to complete the same trip, or they may progress to the next trip tier without having completed the pre-requisite in 2021. Kindly note that TSC reserves the right limit automatic trip tier progression for safety reasons, if relevant, and is unable to accept campers that have reached (or will reach) the age of 18 years at camp. We will be implementing a Questionnaire/ Prequalification process designed to ensure the ‘fitness’ of the camper matches their intended canoe trip. Pre-trip workshops will be implemented as needed.

  • My camper was due to complete a long-trip in 2021, but will be of CIT (counsellor-in-training) age in 2022. What should they do?

We’ll leave the decision up to you. Provided your child will reach the age of 17 years in 2022, they will be eligible to participate in our CIT program in 2022. If instead they wish to take the trip they missed in 2021 they may do so provided they have not reached (or will not reach) the age of 18 during camp. We are unable to accept 18 year old campers.

  • My child was going to be a CIT (counsellor-in-training) in 2021. Will they get to be a cabin counsellor/guide/instructor in 2022?

We appreciate that missing your CIT year is a big deal, and we encourage your child to apply to TSC as a staff member in 2022 corresponding to their current age. The camp has planned a number of modifications to our staff training process including some on-line training during the winter and spring months, some early workshops up at camp, and some additional 3rd party pre-pre and pre-camp training sessions to support any staff needing some additional training.

  • What is new and exciting at TSC and what adjustments, if any, have you made to account for 2 summers of not operating?

Please refer to additional details in the registration sections and in our Terms and Conditions, however by way of summary we have adjusted the following:

    • Our 2 weeks sessions are now available to anyone up to and including age 14
    • Try Out Camper (TOCO)sessions are now available for campers up to and including 8 years of age attending a TSC camper session for the first time.
    • Long Canoe Trip questionnaire and pre-qualification process along with pre-trip workshops
    • Additional in-camp canoe trip skill workshops prior to departure
    • Modified trip routes and durations, if necessary, to suit cabin group abilities
    • Some new and exciting in-camp activities like our formal, professional Frisbee Golf course, Badminton, Pickleball and Volleyball, and Gagaball at Wapomeo! Stay tuned to our website Activity section for more information.
  • What have you done during the time that your normal operations were closed?

We have upgraded the facility where we can- for example we have two brand new Camper cabin complexes in our Pioneer section for a total of 6 brand new cabins! We have done a lot of behind-the-scenes infrastructure plumbing and electrical upgrades as well as a lot of re-roofing of existing cabins. We have also done a lot of planning for the summer 2022 with many new and exciting programs that are all designed to enhance our product and provide an even better experience for our campers and summer staff. Please refer to other correspondence as well as our website for more detailed information.

  • When will the Online Tuck Shop re-open for the purchase of camp clothing and articles?

We anticipate re-opening our online Tuck Shop in time for the holiday season. Further details will be provided closer to the time.

  • How Can I help?

2020 and 2021 have been devastating for many of us in the Summer camping industry. For those who know families that would benefit from sending their children to either Camp Ahmek or Camp Wapomeo, please tell them about our community and encourage them to be in touch. If you would like to host a virtual information session, we will help arrange logistics. Word of mouth is our best recruitment strategy. Stay tuned for more details about a formal Alumni Referral Program in this regard.

  • Will September (Family) Camp operate in 2022?

Yes! Further registration details will be provided in early 2022. David is extremely excited to welcome you all back next August for what should be an extraordinary celebration of the return of September Camp. There will be special events celebrating the 100th anniversary of Camp Ahmek as well as a nod to the Wapomeo 100 year anniversary coming in 2024.

  • What if I left my deposit with you in 2021?

Thank you again for opting to leave your funds with us over the summer of 2021. These funds have been automatically rolled into your 2022 shopping cart! When registration opens on October 4th, you will see your credit balance on your account.

If you have any issues, give us a call in the office!
